August 2008 Auntie Margaret Visit
On
August 14th, 2008, it was my great privilege to visit
the Big island of Hawaii again after moving to the
mainland 35 years ago. I was there to attend the wedding of
my dear friends, Julie and Kalani, as well as on a spiritual
pilgrimage to spend time with my Kumu, Auntie Margaret Machado.
Auntie has had several strokes and I had been scheduled to see
her 3 times in the last 3 years. All 3 meetings were canceled
for various reasons (including the earthquake on Oahu last year),
and I wondered if my dream of seeing her was simply that, a dream.
At 7:00 p.m. on the 14th, I was warmly welcomed into Auntie's
home by her daughter Lana, and her caregiver Susan. I was blessed
to have my friend and former student Jane with me, and we were
in awe as we were ushered into Auntie's room.
I had been told by people that Auntie would not be able to communicate
or recognize me, however the opposite occurred. After Jane and
I greeted her, and told her how grateful we were to be there,
and the news of Julies wedding, I began to sing songs to her that
she had taught me so long ago. She started saying "Thank
you", and then "I love you", and then
she began to softly sing some of the words with me. It was a profound
moment, as our eyes met and we were communicating as only Auntie
can do in her unconditionally loving way. I instantly felt healing
energy pass from her into me; body, mind, and spirit, and I felt
a renewed sense of my mission to carry on the work that she taught
me.
I had previously been telling my friends and students that I
was going to quit teaching and sharing Lomi Lomi because of all
of the pilikia (trouble) going on within the world of Lomi Lomi.
There is so much misinformation circulating throughout the world,
particularly through the internet, and at 58 I felt ready to retire.
Standing next to Auntie brought back her words that inspired
me to "stay the course" all these years.
She called me her "hippie haole girl" in 1973, and told
me that I would be the one to share "the loving touch" of
Lomi Lomi throughout the world. I remember wondering what she
meant when she said it would be "a battle on the march," and
in her presence again I came full circle and fully realized that
it had recently become a battle for me as I continued to carry
the torch of Lomi Lomi, encountering misunderstandings and physical
challenges along the way. All of my battle scars were healed instantly
as I felt my teachers loving touch, unconditional love, and gratitude
for my service to her souls task of sharing the gift of Hawaiian
Lomi Lomi with the world, starting in 1973.
I
came to realize that Auntie was 58 when I apprenticed under her
in 1973, the same age as I am now. I assumed that her daughters
Lana and Nerita were younger than me, however the next day when
I returned to Auntie's house I learned that we are almost a decade
apart in age. I mentioned that they must be getting a lot of help
with caring for their mother. They shared that assistance is needed
in every way. I gave them each a short
Lomi Lomi treatment and felt inspired to give back the nurturing
love to their family that their mother gave to me. I soon left
with a mission in my heart to raise awareness
and funds for Auntie's care and the continuation of her school.
Update; as mentioned above, Auntie passed away on December 28th. If you want to help keep Aunties school open, please mail your check, payable
